Doing Images: Zur Praxis medizinischer Bilder

Dieser Band ist die erste deutschsprachige Ethnografie zu bildgebenden Verfahren in der Medizin. Im Zentrum steht die Frage nach der Herstellung, Interpretation und Verwendung medizinischer Bilder sowie nach der Bedeutung, die ihnen in der medizinischen Praxis zukommt. Die theoretisch anspruchsvolle Studie greift auf Konzepte der Wissenschafts- und Technikforschung und der Kultursoziologie sowie auf Ergebnisse von Feldforschungen in der Schweiz, in Deutschland und in den USA zurück. Sie zielt darauf ab, einen reflexiven Umgang mit medizinischen (und allgemein wissenschaftlichen) Bildern zu fördern und das analytische Instrumentarium in der Soziologie zu erweitern

Aktuelle Perspektiven soziologischer Bildforschung

Bildern kommt eine zunehmende Bedeutung in der modernen Gesellschaft zu. Dennoch hat sich die Soziologie bis anhin nur zögerlich mit der Rolle von Bildern und Visualität bei der (Re-)Produktion von Sozialität auseinandergesetzt. Erst in allerjüngster Zeit haben sich einige Vertreter des Fachs dieser Frage angenommen. Aktuell beginnt sich eine soziologische Bildforschung herauszukristallisieren. Der Beitrag zeichnet diesen Visual Turn in der Soziologie nach und gibt einen Literaturüberblick. Images are increasingly important in modern societies. Images as Social Practice: Outline of a Sociology of the Visual

Bilder sind in sämtlichen Bereichen gesellschaftlichen Lebens omnipräsent; die (post-)moderne Gesellschaft ist eine Gesellschaft der "visuellen Kultur". Die Soziologie hat es jedoch bis heute versäumt, Bilder und Visualität theoretisch zu reflektieren. Der Aufsatz unternimmt den Versuch, dieses Desiderat nicht nur zu diagnostizieren, sondern gleichzeitig die Anforderungen an eine Soziologie des Visuellen zu formulieren. Darüber hinaus wird mit den Begriffen 'visuelle Logik' und 'visuelle Rationalität' ein konzeptuelles, praxistheoretisches Instrumentarium für eine soziologische Bildanalyse entwickelt und anhand einer ethnografischen Untersuchung medizinischer Bildpraktiken empirisch illustriert.(Post-)modern societies can be understood as "visual cultures." Despite the ubiquity of images in social life, social theorists have, to date, paid little attention to images and "the visual." This paper aims to outline what can be understood as a sociology of the visual. It suggests two new concepts - "visual logic" and "visual rationality" - to analyze imaging practices from a sociological perspective. By drawing on ethnographic fieldwork in the area of medical imaging, the paper shows how these concepts serve as analytical tools to explore and understand imaging practices in medicine

Deliberating risks under uncertainty: experience, trust, and attitudes in a Swiss nanotechnology stakeholder discussion group

Scientific knowledge has not stabilized in the current, early, phase of research and development of nanotechnologies creating a challenge to ‘upstream' public engagement. Nevertheless, the idea that the public should be involved in deliberative discussions and assessments of emerging technologies at this early stage is widely shared among governmental and nongovernmental stakeholders. Many forums for public debate including focus groups, and citizen juries, have thus been organized to explore public opinions on nanotechnologies in a variety of countries over the past few years. In Switzerland the Centre for Technology Assessment (TA-Swiss) organized such a citizen panel in fall 2006. Drawing from an ethnographic study of this panel called ‘publifocus on nanotechnologies, health, and environment' this paper looks at the ways members of a stakeholder group deal with the epistemic uncertainty in their deliberation of nanotechnologies. By exploring the statements of the participants in the stakeholder discussion group, this paper reconstructs the narratives that constitute the epistemic foundations of the participants' evaluations of nanotechnologie

Envisioning futures: imagining technoscientific worlds in film

Abstract Films can be seen as cultural projections of technoscientific futures. The ways that technoscience is represented in films may shape the way we perceive future innovations and the social implications of such developments. Films can thus serve as documents to study cultural perceptions of the future. This paper explores how visions of future technoscientific worlds are enacted in films by analyzing exemplary short movies that were created for the first science film festival organized with support of the German federal government within the scope of its “foresight process.” By applying methods from qualitative social research, this paper discusses how the selected films represent the roles of both humans and technoscience in future worlds. Although these films each display different visions of such roles, the analysis shows that they all address the importance of technoscience in future lives and imagine that humans embrace an active role as (self-) entrepreneurs and political subjects within future technoscientific worlds
